WSBK: Superpole Sessions at Magny-Cours Nearly Prove Costly to Championship Leader

Jonathan Rea won pole for the 2011 World Superbike round at Magny-Cours with a new circuit record (1:37.490), beating out fellow front-row starters Eugene Laverty, Carlos Checa, and Leon Camier. The latter’s teammate, Max Biaggi, is again missing this weekend. It is his third missed race weekend in a row, as a practice injury sustained at the Nurburgring continues to heal slowly. Though championship leader Checa starts on the front row for both of Sunday’s ...

MotoGP: Japanese GP Proves to be Worth the Hype

A less well-known MotoGP factoid is that Honda owns the Twin Ring Motegi circuit, though to the casual observer HRC clearly had a dominate presence at Motegi this weekend, with eight bikes on the grid throughout the race weekend. As the Yamahas struggled throughout the week, and with Ducati still hunting for a setup that will allow them to compete near the front, Honda continued to make a point of national unity at the Japanese ...

2011 Magny-Cours World Superbike QP1 Result: Checa Edges Laverty And Guintoli

Carlos Checa continues to top the timesheets in the World Superbike class at Magny-Cours, the Althea Ducati rider taking provisional pole at the end of the first session of qualifying. But Checa's margin is very slim indeed: the Spaniard finished a mere twelve thousandths of a second faster than Yamaha's Eugene Laverty, and just under nine hundredths quicker than 3rd place man Sylvain Guintoli on the Effenbert Liberty Ducati, the Frenchman finding an extra turn of pace at his home round.

The gaps are minimal throughout the sadly depleted field - Max Biaggi is sitting out the weekend once again as his broken foot heals, while Ruben Xaus was forced to skip the first session of qualifying after crashing and injuring his neck. The top 16 are covered by less than a second, and while Marco Melandri's provisional grid position is pretty poor - the only man capable of preventing Checa from taking the title this weekend set the 14th fastest time on Friday afternoon - his time is only two-thirds of a second slower than Checa's.

There is still all to play for, however. The 16 riders due to go through to Superpole will be decided after the second qualifying session tomorrow morning, and the final grid is to be determined during Superpole on Saturday afternoon.

Motorcycle Drawings by Rich Lee Draws!!!

I stumbled upon these drawings last week, and have been meaning to post them up ever since. While Asphalt & Rubber likes to cover the art side of the industry, that vein is primarily relegated to concept sketches and renders, and while it is fun to ponder the “what if” side of motorcycles and use a little imagination, we rarely get a chance to appreciate art for simply being art. That being said, these drawings ...
